Introducing Sur La Table Butter

April 1, 2016 by Sur La Table

Sur La Table butter for April Fools' Day

We’re always excited about launching new products here at Sur La Table, but this one might take the cake. Coming soon to the refrigerated section of our stores nationwide: Sur La Table Butter!

This line of exclusive butters has been in the works for months, and our resident chefs have partnered with artisan dairy farmers and noted flavorists to perfect each one. We’ll be offering eight varieties to start:

#1 Classic: This creamy, salt-scented butter is sourced from cows of French descent that graze in a pasture near the first-ever Sur La Table store in Seattle. Ideal for both everyday buttering and seasonal toast points.

#2 Lemon: Crêpes, get ready to meet our little citrus friend. We love this one for its delicate flavor profile, which includes notes of scone mix and morning florals for a butter experience like none other.

#3 Supper Butter: Simply put, this one’s for dinner. From dressing simple pasta dishes to elevating any old baguette, this butter is produced using a method from an old café in the town where Le Creuset cookware originated. As legend has it, the proprietress, a farmer’s wife, would milk the cows after dark, believing that cooler night-time temperatures yielded milk (and, eventually, butter) that was better suited to evening meals. We agree, Madame!

#4 Sweet Gris: We informally call this one the yin/yang of our butter assortment. Sweet cream meets the savory punch of one of our favorite Bitterman’s Salts, Sel Gris, for an encounter that’s sure to confuse and delight even the most ardent of palettes.

#5 Slow Butter: For dishes that require simmering and slow cooking. Great for stews, soups, when you don’t want to mow the lawn, and anything involving duck.

#6 Tough Budder: From the rough-and-tumble cows. Use it to season your favorite cast-iron pan.

#7 Bon Appétit Butter: Did you know that through April 15, purchases of $50 or more made at one of our stores or on surlatable.com qualify for a one-year subscription to Bon Appétit magazine? It’s true, so we’re celebrating with (you guessed it) butter! This limited-edition offering is a high-quality lifestyle butter, churned to the exact specifications of the BA test kitchen. It also has the best Instagram accounts.

#8 Beurre: Identical to our Classic variety, but the name is entirely in French. Try it with our Beurre Butter Dish!

Aaaaaand butter flavor #9: Happy April Fools’ Day! While we would love to taste a few of the varieties on this list for fun, we’re very happy with our (very real) partner in butter, Kerrygold, which supplies the butter for Sur La Table Cooking Classes across the country. Yes, they supply the beurre, too.

This isn’t our first butter rodeo: read about A Sharp Knife & Salt’s butter taste test here.

Hi Jeanette! My family is from Long Island, small world. :)

I wish we’d be carrying Sur La Table butter (the “Sweet Gris” would be my top pick), but alas we were just having some April Fool’s fun today with this post. I highly recommend Kerrygold though, it’s great quality. You can get that at most grocers. Add some Bitterman’s salts (which we do carry!) or some freshly-grated lemon zest and you’re good to go.

      Have a great weekend!

Would love to know where the pasture located near the first Seattle Sur la Table store is. Safeco Field? ;-)

Love it! You had me until you suggested seasoning cast iron with the lowest smoke point fat in the kitchen… That had me audibly chuckling.
