Today, we’re chatting about stocking a basic kitchen and what to eat for breakfast with Khalid Khan, the store manager for our store in Santa Monica, California.
So, what’s the best part of your job?
I love our customers and associates, especially talking to them about food and entertaining.
In your opinion, a Sur La Table store is … ?
Heaven for people who love food and entertaining.
Say someone walks into your store and tells you that they don’t have a single thing in their kitchen, equipment-wise. What do you recommend as a “starter kit”?
Everyone needs a good cookware set, knife set and stainless steel tools. I believe cookware is the connection between you and the fire. Knives are also an extension of you. You want to take care of all of that with great, quality tools. My personal favorites are Mauviel, Miyabi Birchwood, and our own Sur La Table professional stainless steel tools.
Which ingredients will we always find in your pantry and fridge?
Are there tools that you just can’t go without these days?
In your experience, is there something that should be in everyone’s kitchen, but most likely isn’t?
A fine and coarse grater. You’ll use them for everything from grating citrus to cheese to nutmeg. Also, a splatter screen instead of a lid. It’ll make a huge difference when you are using a frying pan. Flour sack towels — you can even use them for straining! I also love Epicurean cutting boards because you can use them as trivets for hot dishes, and they are so easy to care for. Lastly … jellyroll pans. Use them for everything from baking to roasting.
How did you first become interested in cooking?
My earliest memory of cooking was my mom and dad cooking. I remember all the different spices they used. That’s what got me.
Has working for Sur La Table changed the way you approach food and cooking at all?
It has completely changed the way I approach food and cooking! Now I know that good cooking is all about having the right tools and the best ingredients possible.
So what are your favorite toppings to put on a pizza?
I love a classic pizza with mushrooms, bell peppers and pepperoni on a thin crust.
What does breakfast usually look like for you?
Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day! I can go for it anytime. My favorite breakfast is potato hash and eggs, but I also love oatmeal. You can have it so many different ways.
Did you make any food-related resolutions for the New Year?
I would love to shop only at my local farmers market and cook only with seasonal ingredients.
