While there’s nothing wrong with celebrating the Fourth by swilling cheap beer in your backyard kiddie pool or engaging in some light explosives-related shenanigans, for me those activities don’t quite possess the same luster they once did. The former loses some of its appeal for those of us who no longer have the miraculous metabolisms of the youthful, and as for the latter … Well, as a writer, let’s just say I’m literally attached to my fingers. Yes, literally works there.
This Fourth is going to be a scorcher (at least by Seattle standards), so I’m planning to spend it savoring a summery cocktail or two, ideally while sprawled in a hammock and being fanned by a legion of admirers (sure, it’s not likely, but I figured as long as I was daydreaming…). I also intend to enjoy plate upon plate of backyard barbecue fare, and I will accept no deviations from that plan due to the limits of my frail human body. My cocktail must, therefore, meet a few criteria: it must feature citrus juice and be served over ice, it must not be cloyingly sweet and it must not fill me up. Enter the Smoky Mezcal Margarita.
Sure, it might be made with Oaxacan mezcal instead of good ol’ Kentucky bourbon or the grandaddy of all American spirits, applejack, but it’s complex, refreshing and easy to mix up in advance. Just the drink for a scorching holiday weekend.
So join me in raising a glass to the US of A. Just remember: drink lots of water, a ridiculous sun hat is perfectly acceptable attire and the fuse is never as long as you think it is.
Happy Fourth of July!
