You know what I’m tired of? Other than rush hour traffic and living in a Khal Drogo-less world? Going to the grocery store and seeing every magazine tell me to start the New Year “right.” Change your diet! Get healthy! Shed those holiday pounds! All as soon as the clock strikes January 1.
Here’s a crazy thought: what if I don’t want to shed those holiday pounds quite yet? What if I earned them after a good-but-sometimes-tough year, capped off by finding the perfect, softest, button-down blue plaid shirt for my boyfriend for Christmas, only to have him cruelly reject it?* What if I already eat pretty healthy most of the time? What if I don’t have too many lbs to lose so I’m not sweating it?
What if I just really like cheeseburgers?
Look— I enjoy a green smoothie, a bowl of quinoa, and not giving myself heart disease as much as the next guy, but I reject the idea that you have to cleanse and cut and restrict straight away at the top of the year.
If healthier eating is a goal of yours, which I fully endorse, then go for it! Just don’t bum yourself out if that’s not what feels good to you on day 1. This is a time to celebrate—you’ve got 365 sparkling new days ahead of you, and you made it through the last 365.
My two cents: treat yourself. And don’t feel like you’ve blown it if said treat is carb-heavy, cheesy, or otherwise doesn’t fit into what’s supposed to be right. Healthier meals will be there, and they will be delicious and fuel you. Your Vitamix will be there, and it will be awesome (seriously, everything they say is true). So will your juicer, your GreenPan**, your steamer, your Spiral Slicer for making surprisingly addictive curly noodles out of zucchini, and the rest of it.
So grill that steak. Buy that triple-cream cheese. Go for that bacon on your cheeseburger. If you’re like me, bump up that maximum per-bottle wine purchase to $17. Or ignore this and grab yourself a fistful of raw spinach. Get some! Whatever it is that tastes like the best, most celebratory and indulgent way to kick things off today, do that. 2015 is a whole new game, and there’s time for everything. Eat up.
*In his defense, he was pretty nice about it. I just really thought it was a winner.
**I’ll take one in Sage, please.
