Valentine’s Day is right around the corner so you know what that means, right? An excuse to eat copious amounts of chocolate! (Just kidding! Well, not really…) It’s time to get into the kitchen and do some serious baking whether it’s heart-shaped sugar cookies for your favorite kid’s class party or a decadent chocolate dessert for you and your loved one.
As a perfect finish to a romantic dinner, this Chocolate Velvet Pound Cake recipe is one of my favorites because it’s so versatile and you can make it ahead of time. You can even bake it far in advance and freeze it, because you never know when you’ll need a piece of rich chocolate cake, so it’s best to be prepared. This tasty cake can be baked in cute mini Bundt pans for a dainty decorative (and portion-controlled) approach or you can actually use any type of cake pan and adjust the baking time accordingly.
I’ve heard rumors that not everyone loves chocolate (shocking!) so thankfully there are many other tasty dessert options. Another great dessert for busy bakers is burnt cream custard (or crème brûlée if you’re feeling fancy) because it requires only a few ingredients and can be made ahead of time. I also love making burnt cream because it gives me the chance to whip out my trusty kitchen torch. Don’t worry, you don’t have to use a torch to caramelize the sugar atop your custard, it’s just more fun that way. The broiler in your oven will work just fine, just keep an eye on your custards and don’t walk away. (An interesting side note, the English and the French are duking it out over bragging rights to which country first created burnt cream custard.)
If you’re really pressed for time, or are not yet a confident baker, you should check out our selection of gourmet baking mixes which are totally delicious. I’ve tested out several of these at home and they’ve been a hit with everyone. There are even some red velvet varieties that might fit nicely into a special Valentine’s Day theme.
What’s your favorite special dessert for Valentine’s Day?
