People are putting some strange things in coffee these days. Flavored syrups and spice mixes I can understand—even bean-to-cup stalwarts Blue Bottle use a little chicory—but butter and coconut oil? Butter? To which I ask: whatever happened to whiskey?
Sure, the rest of the brunch crowd may gravitate toward their mimosas and Bloody Mary’s, but for my money the best late morning/early afternoon fare is this riff on the classic Irish coffee. Swap out the hot coffee for some high-octane cold press, and you have a refreshing, eye-opening take on the traditional hair-of-the-dog. Feel free to experiment by adding a couple drams of your favorite flavored syrup or liqueur (Nocino is a great choice). Just stay away from the coconut oil.
